Government's Rubbish Tax

Government's Rubbish Tax

Trials of a scheme to tax householders who throw away too much rubbish are to forge ahead, Downing Street has said.

It had been reported that Gordon Brown was planning to scrap the policy after Labour's disastrous showing in the local elections in England and Wales.

The huge losses on Thursday led to heavy criticism of the prime minister's leadership by backbenchers.

The so-called pay-as-you-throw scheme, which would be run by local councils, has already been scaled back and it was thought it would now be ditched altogether.

But Downing Street has insisted they are to press ahead with the trials.

Labour MP Joan Walley, a former environment spokesman, said she was worried the government was sending out the wrong signals.

Is this yet another one of Labour's failed policies based on fairness and social justice?

Not so long ago, Strood & Medway residents will recall that the local Labour Party were claiming that Medway Council was going to introduce fortnightly collections, becuase of a minute in council papers. Lets just hope, that when this gets discussed in the Council chamber, they recall who proposed it.

So now, local residents who are already worried about rising petrol and food prices and utility bills, now have something else to contend with.

This has been a right old mess-up at Central Government level for some time now.

Although I am keen to enourage more recycling, I still prefer the "dangling a carrot" approach rather than beating us all with a stick.

You are completely correct that the Council was effectively required to look at the possibility of fortnightly waste collection, entirely because of Government impositions, but I can divulge from the inside that the Medway Conservative Group had ruled it out, as a matter of policy, right from when it was first mooted. Any and all claims to the contrary are incorrect, and indeed there was never once any indication that the Council's Ruling Group would countenance such a change. Anyone who claimed otherwise needs to be challenged to produce evidence -- of which there is none anyway!

Anybody who was taken in my Labour claims on this -- particularly in Strood,. where I am aware it was tried on by at least one Labour candidate in the 2007 local elections -- has been hubba-hubba'd. It was a hundred percent dishonest.

I agree with you both on this matter. Changing to a fortnightly waste collection or taxing us if we throw away too much rubbish is ludicrous but I do agree 100% that there should be more done to encourage recycling.

I bet that my council tax will not be reduced if there was a reduced service. Imagine trying that stunt in the business world, you would be crucified and be out of business in no time!
